Associação F/SOS – Fotografia, Solidariedade e Obras Sociais is proud to announce the creation of the UNESCO Club F/SOS – Photography, Heritage and Citizenship, formalised on September 14 in partnership with the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO. This new Club joins the Portuguese Network of Associations and Clubs for UNESCO, marking an important milestone in the Association’s history.

The signing ceremony took place at Casa-Museu Jaime Umbelino – Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia (CEF), in Foz do Arelho, which will now host the Club’s headquarters. The agreement was signed by Dr. João Carlos, President of F/SOS, and by Dr.ª Rita Brasil de Brito, Executive Secretary of the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO.

This recognition reflects the work F/SOS has built over the years through photography — bringing together people, generations and territories, and developing educational, cultural, social and community projects grounded in the power of the image.

For F/SOS, photography is more than an artistic medium: it is a tool for education, for preserving heritage and memory, for inclusion, citizenship, visual literacy and intercultural dialogue — values that align closely with UNESCO’s own mission.

Joining the Portuguese Network of Associations and Clubs for UNESCO opens new opportunities for F/SOS to exchange experiences, build synergies, and develop joint initiatives with other member organisations across the country.

This new chapter reaffirms F/SOS’s commitment to photography as a language of memory, dialogue, participation and citizenship — and to continuing this work with renewed purpose alongside UNESCO and its network.
