Preserving the Past. Experimenting with the Future.
Housed within the historic Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino, the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia (CEF) is a place where memory inspires creation and photography becomes a catalyst for learning, dialogue, and innovation.
Built upon a legacy of culture, education, and community, the CEF explores photography not only as an artistic practice but also as a tool for research, storytelling, heritage preservation, and social impact.
Through exhibitions, residencies, workshops, talks, and public programs, the CEF brings together artists, photographers, students, researchers, and communities to explore new ideas, challenge perspectives, and imagine new possibilities.
At its core, the CEF is a meeting place between history and contemporary creation, preserving the past while experimenting with the future.
Mission
To preserve, explore, and advance photography as a tool for artistic expression, education, cultural heritage, and social engagement, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful connections between people, images, and communities.
Vision
To establish the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia as a leading cultural hub for photography in Portugal, where heritage, innovation, education, and artistic practice converge to inspire dialogue, learning, and creative discovery.
Areas of Activity
Exhibitions
The CEF presents a dynamic programme of exhibitions featuring emerging and established photographers from Portugal and around the world. Through documentary, artistic, conceptual, and socially engaged projects, exhibitions encourage reflection, dialogue, and new ways of seeing.
Education
Education lies at the heart of the CEF. Through workshops, masterclasses, portfolio reviews, school visits, talks, and lifelong learning opportunities, the centre promotes visual literacy and supports the development of photographic knowledge and creative skills for all audiences.
Community Engagement
Photography has the power to connect people and strengthen communities. The CEF develops participatory projects that encourage inclusion, collaboration, and cultural exchange, working closely with local organisations, schools, associations, and community groups.
Heritage & Memory
Situated within the Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino, the CEF embraces the preservation and interpretation of cultural and photographic heritage. Through research, documentation, exhibitions, and public programmes, the centre contributes to safeguarding visual memory for future generations.
Artistic Experimentation
True to its name, the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia serves as a space for exploration and innovation. The CEF supports experimentation with photographic processes, emerging technologies, interdisciplinary practices, alternative image-making techniques, and new forms of visual storytelling.
Analog Lab
The Analog Lab is a dedicated space for the practice, preservation, and exploration of analogue photography.
Designed for photographers, artists, students, and enthusiasts, the laboratory supports film photography, darkroom processes, alternative printing techniques, and experimental image-making. Through workshops, residencies, demonstrations, and hands-on learning, the Analog Lab preserves traditional photographic knowledge while encouraging contemporary creative exploration.
As part of the CEF’s commitment to both heritage and innovation, the Analog Lab serves as a bridge between the history of photography and its future possibilities.
Photography Library & Resource Centre
The Photography Library is a growing resource dedicated to the study, appreciation, and preservation of photographic culture.
The collection includes photobooks, exhibition catalogues, artist monographs, historical publications, technical manuals, academic research, and contemporary visual culture resources. Designed as a place for learning, reflection, and discovery, the library supports photographers, students, researchers, educators, and the wider public.
Over time, the library aims to become an important regional resource for photographic knowledge, fostering research, education, and lifelong learning.
Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino
At the heart of the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia stands the Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino, a place deeply rooted in the cultural history of Foz do Arelho.
The former Casa do Arco, birthplace of Jaime Umbelino, was entrusted to the community as a lasting legacy of culture, education, and public service. Today, the house preserves that legacy while embracing new forms of artistic and cultural expression.
By bringing together heritage and contemporary practice, the Casa Museu provides a distinctive setting for the CEF’s activities, creating a space where memory inspires creation and where the past continues to inform the future.
