Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino
A living library of books, photography, memory, and shared knowledge
The story of the Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino begins with Jaime himself.
A writer, linguist, educator, and lifelong advocate for learning, Jaime Umbelino had a deep connection to books, education, and knowledge. His relationship with libraries was also part of his professional life, having worked at the Municipal Library of Torres Vedras before later becoming its director.
Today, at the Casa-Museu Jaime Umbelino in Foz do Arelho, we are continuing that legacy by creating a library that brings together literature, local history, education, photography, art, and visual culture.
The Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino is a living library. Books are here to be read, consulted, discovered, exchanged, and shared. The collection grows through donations, partnerships, exchanges, and contributions from the community, creating a resource that evolves with the people who use it.
Photography has a special place within the library through the work of the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia (CEF), bringing together photobooks, artist books, exhibition catalogues, photographic publications, and other resources dedicated to the image and visual culture.
But this is not simply a collection of books.
It is a place where knowledge can move between generations, where a local history can sit beside a photobook, where a photograph can lead to a question, and where a question can lead to another book.
A library built through exchange
Some books enter through donation. Others through exchange, partnerships, or initiatives connecting photographic prints and publications.
Each book brings with it a history, and each new reader adds something to that history.
A thousand books make a library.
A community makes it come alive.
From the Casa-Museu to the community
The library also extends beyond the walls of the Casa-Museu through the Little Free Library Jaime Umbelino.
Part of the international Little Free Library network, it offers a different way for books to circulate:
Take a book. Leave a book. Share a story.
While the Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino provides a place to stay, read, research, and discover, the Little Free Library allows books to travel into the community and find new readers.
Together, they continue something Jaime understood deeply: that access to knowledge can change lives, and that knowledge becomes more valuable when it is shared.
Preserving memory. Sharing knowledge. Inspiring discovery.
Little Free Library Jaime Umbelino
The Little Free Library Jaime Umbelino extends the Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino beyond the Casa-Museu and into the community.
Our library is part of the international Little Free Library network, a global nonprofit initiative that connects communities through freely accessible book-sharing libraries.
The principle is simple:
Take a book. Leave a book.
Books placed in the Little Free Library are free for anyone to discover and take with them. Readers can also contribute books of their own, allowing the collection to continually change and circulate.
For the Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino, this creates a natural connection between preservation and circulation. The library inside the Casa-Museu provides a place to read, consult, study, and discover; the Little Free Library allows books to leave the building and continue their journey through the community.
The initiative also connects Foz do Arelho to a much wider international network of readers, volunteers, libraries, and communities working to make books more accessible.
One library, connected to a world of readers.

A Living Library of Books, Images & Ideas
The Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino is built around a simple idea: books, photographs, and knowledge become more meaningful when they are shared.
The collection brings together literature, local history, education, photography, visual culture, artist publications, exhibition catalogues, and other resources connected to the cultural life of the Casa-Museu Jaime Umbelino and the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia.
The library grows through donations, exchanges, partnerships, and community contributions, creating a collection that continues to evolve with the people who contribute to it and use it.
Photobook Exchanges
During F/262 and selected CEF events, participants are invited to bring photobooks and photography-related publications to exchange with others or contribute to the library.
These exchanges create a non-monetary circulation of books, ideas, inspiration, and creative work.
Prints for Books
Through selected initiatives, photographic prints may be exchanged for photobooks and photography publications.
This creates a direct connection between the photographic work produced through the CEF and the development of the library’s collection, allowing images and books to support one another.
Building the Collection
Books acquired through exchanges, donations, partnerships, and contributions become part of the Biblioteca Jaime Umbelino.
Over time, the collection will grow into a resource for photographers, artists, students, researchers, educators, readers, and the wider community.
It is not intended to be a static archive, but a library that continues to develop through participation and exchange.
